On 3 January 1901, six friends founded the Ski-Club Arlberg at the Hotel Hospiz in St. Christoph, now one of the most decorated ski clubs in the world. Two decades later, Hannes Schneider developed the Arlberg technique here and opened St. Anton's first ski school. The Galzigbahn, reinvented.
Rebuilt in 2006 on the technology of a Ferris wheel, the Galzigbahn lets passengers board at ground level and carries them into the heart of the ski area. At night, its glass structure is lit from within, a landmark that has replaced the original 1937 gondola without erasing its purpose.

Hannes Schneider refined the Arlberg method in the early 1900s and opened St. Anton's first ski school in 1921, while the Ski-Club Arlberg, founded in 1901, is among the oldest and most decorated ski clubs in the world. During the last century, skiing as we know it today has been mainly developed at the Ski Academy in St. Christoph.

Since the connecting lifts opened in December 2016, St. Anton am Arlberg has formed part of the Ski Arlberg - ski area together with St. Christoph, Stuben, Lech, Zürs, Warth and Schröcken, covering more than 300 kilometres of marked runs and 85 lifts and cable cars, Austria's largest contiguous ski area.
St. Anton am Arlberg has its own Railjet station in the village centre, with seven direct connections a day from both Vienna and Zurich, and trains from Innsbruck arriving roughly 75 minutes later. Hotels and lifts are within walking distance of the platform.
