GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN, GERMANY
Culture and nature, sport
and recreation Garmisch-Partenkirchen surprises with its diversity. The
location alone, in front of the backdrop of the Zugspitze mountain, is
unique. Moreover, as the highest peak in Germany (2,962 metres), the
Zugspitze is renowned worldwide. The town has also made a name for itself
as a premium health resort profiting from a therapeutic climate.
International winter sport events such as the World Cup ski race on the
legendary Kandahar slope, and the New Year ski jumping competition on the
new Olympic jump are well-known far beyond the borders. In 2011, the
popular destination will host the FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup. However, in
Garmisch-Partenkirchen sport is not reserved for the professionals: There
are no limits for active people irrespective of season. Despite its
cosmopolitan nature, the region has safeguarded its Bavarian
Gemuetlichkeit and tradition. It is the mixture of intact natural
surroundings, the variety of sporting possibilities, and the Bavarian way
of life that makes Garmisch-Partenkirchen an attractive holiday
destination.
